Lead magnets are used effectively by online marketers. You see them all the time! Some work better than others, so I’ve limited these suggestions to ones that outperform most others.
Convert popular articles into a checklist.
- Identify and outline actionable items
- Consider how to make it easy to follow and understand
- Utilize screenshot & images (wikihow.com for examples)
Using tools like Designr, you can instantly convert your most popular blogs into an ebook. I suggest you focus on just one specific topic per ebook. You can easily add/remove images and text.
Offer a free tutorial video series:
- Create a playlist tutorial video series
- Place a link in the first three lines in the description below each video pointing back to an opt-in form.
- Use external annotation pointing back to the website allowing the viewer to click pop-up box leading to your website from within the video.
- Complete metadata
- Respond to comments
- Make it easy to embed and share
- Use it to drive traffic back to your website with links
- Upsell a premium product or service.
Create short videos.
They are easy to digest in a short amount of time. I listen to informative videos I don’t have to actually watch while doing mundane tasks. Among the most popular videos viewed are instructional. 79% of internet users worldwide have a YT account (Dataportal 2019). The top 5 most viewed videos are:
- Product Reviews
- Vlogs (Video logs)
Record a video or an audio answering 2-3 common questions related to your blog.
This is very easy to do and takes hardly any time at all to do. Most readers will have one or two questions related to your content. Anticipate these questions and address them in an audio recording if you’re camera shy (like I am). Not sure what questions? Check out your topic on sites like Quora.
Blogs are great for initial research but they are NOT reference books. If your readers want to save it to follow along later they have to save the URL link, save it somewhere and search for it later.
Not to mention, having to toggle back and forth between tabs when following directions. Why not put your most popular blog into a downloadable PDF.
- Creates a greater perceived value (blog post vs ebook)
- Easily stored, read and shared. A PDF can be stored on the desktop or emailed.
Provide an audio version of your most popular blog posts.
While I was conducting some online research on a particular topic, I came across a blog that included an audio version. At first, I thought this was rather odd. Why bother? Then I got to thinking about it.
If you’re like me, I like to listen to audiobooks while driving. Audiobooks today are extremely popular and a growing industry to be sure. Recording audio of your blog is a great way to expand the reach of your content including those who are visually impaired.
Make sure there are zero background distractions and noises when recording and read your blog out loud. Try not to race through it and enunciate your words. If you have a strong accent, I suggest you find a family member or friend to help you out.
People love shortcuts and templates are very popular indeed. You can find them all over Pinterest as well as e-commerce sites like ETSY. Look up templates related to your industry for ideas.
Running a contest or giveaway is a great way to build your email list! AppSumo built an email list of over 700,000 subscribers by hosting giveaways and providing major discounts on popular software or products.
- Run a search for popular software or product in your niche.
- Purchase it upfront.
- Run a free giveaway promotion.
Offer a free consult with you. Since you’re building yourself up as a success in your niche and/or expert in your field, why not offer a free 30-minute consult? This is a great way to build up a new business.
Instant downloads are everywhere! You know why? Because folks love them and they work. You can offer E-books, videos, worksheets, templates, infographics, checklists, tools etc.
A content upgrade is a bonus piece of content that you can offer your readers in exchange for their email address. Sounds just like a downloadable giveaway, right? They are very similar. The major distinction between the two is that content upgrades are linked to a specific blog post whereas downloadable giveaways can be found statically throughout your site.
One of the most powerful ways to build your email list is through a free online course. Courses are a handy, timely, and effective medium your readers can access at any time to buck up on the topic at hand. They will help you grow your email list by being seen as the authority.
There’s a lot that goes into setting up and presenting a course in an organized and easy to understand manner. So don’t take this step lightly. Check out my 5 Steps Email Course that shows you how to create a lead magnet and set up your first option form to start building your list of email subscribers.
